Fellowship Spring form Mission

#Urbana09

In terms of inter-cultural/inter-ethnic/inter-generational ministry work, one conformation I've been getting at Urbana (affirming what I've leran in NACCOWE) is that "Fellowship springs from Mission. Mission does not spring from Fellowship." When a group of individual have a common mission, independent of their background, there will be fellowship. However, a group of friends 'hanging out' does not mean they have a mission.

Therefore, our ministry is not merely pulling groups of people together and let them have fun with one another, but to instill a purpose and a mission in them.

Reconciliation comes from a sense of mission.

"Love" & "Go"

#Urbana09

It is in the context of deep meaning relationship that spiritual formation takes place. Before any going, before any doing, before any discipleship, there has to be love, connection and reconciliation.

What I am learning today is that in order for the church to move forward as he had promised we would, first there must be reconciliation. This is where I see our congregation is at. We are ready to serve. We are ready to lead. Yet we need to reconcile.

The Great Commission and the Great Commendment goes hand in hand. There's no "Go" without love. There's no "make disciples" without loving your neighbour.

However, to love and to reconcile requires struggles and wrestling with oneself. But struggles and wrestling comes sorrow. Yet there is joy in sorrow. We must approach loving your neighbour and reconciliation not with bitterness, but to embrace sorrow - where we can find joy.

Defender of the Message

#urbana09

I've always been a lay back person. Nothing much gets me angry but however learning from today's "Let Scripture Speak" the Jesus was angry in John 2:13-25.

Jesus was angry because the truth was violated. The temple vendors had allowed the means to replace the message. And when the message of God's salvation to the Gentiles was violated, Jesus got angry.

As I lead my group to Urbana to see Jesus, is there anything violating the message to my students. I should stand up to defend te message, so that the message can then be a model of how to serve.

Breathing a Sigh of Relief

What a relief to finally register for the conference an check-into the hotel - to have the group settled in. Now we can fully enjoy the conference and no worry about the minuet details. Praise God for Albert for getting us awesome rooms for a great rate.

Last night Ramez Atallah took us through John1:1-18. Specifically verse 14. He reminded us that the Incarnation is 1) the means God reaches to us. 2) His message to us - "grace and truth". 3) model of how to minister. (identification, weakness, vulnerability)

Arrived in Urbana2009

After 2 long days on the road, we've arrived at Urbana 2009. Tired, but definitely excited to see all their enthusiasm. I'm just relieved to have them registered and check-in the hotel. Now they can go, explore by themselves, and experience God's Word.

Tired. Time to sleep first. Here are several photos for you to enjoy. Good night.

On the road to Urbana09

Today is our second day on the road to Urbana09. I cannot thank God enough for watching over us on our drive. We were blessed with wonderful weather at the beginning of the trip but as we approached Michigan City yesterday it started to blizzard and the conditions got treachous. We witnessed two cars gone off the side of the highway. The flow of traffic slowed down and we made it into Michigan City uneventfully.

The group had a great night of shopping and triple steakburgers at Steak and Shake when we came up with the ambitious idea to hit Willow Creek for Sunday Service. I knew it would be a good experience but I also know that it would be taxing to the group with another early morning start and an extra 1.5 hours of driving. However they seem eager and we went ahead with the plan.

In the morning we were pressed for time so we didn't have time to stop for breakfast but we made it to Willow at 9:10a for early Service. I was worry about the moral of the group for skipping breakfast but it seem that they were able to sleep during the ride and they were excited to experience Willow.

Compared to 3 years ago, I begin to find this Urbana experience very different. Three years ago I was merely a fellow participant at Urbana with the other 5 of us from the church. But this time I am their pastor with 19 of us in total. There's the pressure of watching over this group and maintaining their moral throughout the conference. I guess my heart can rest a little when we settle down at St. Louis. But I pray that I can set a good example for my congregation as Freda and I lead them.

The condition on the road is patchy right now. Praying for our current drivers: Gen, Joel Lau and Freda as well as other still en route to Urbana.

Nepal Slashes Rates for Climbing Everest

I have preached about the sacrifice and the cost of climbing Mount Everest.... but look, Nepal will be reducing the rates to climb Mount Everest by up to 70%. The bad news is that you’ll have to climb during autumn and winter, so plan on only going partway up or at least tell your family they’ll have to host your funeral without a body. Nepal regularly charges about $70,000 per team for a permit to climb Mount Everest, and so far no teams are planning on climbing in autumn or winter. I’m a bargain shopper—they say it’s more dangerous in winter, but I’m sure it’ll be fine.

Harry Potter and Wilderness Survival

Since I started reading Harry Potter a few weeks ago (thanks Jenny & Phivan), I came across an article on how the average witch or wizard would cope in the backcountry with nothing but a wand. It only refers to spells/charms that actually come up in the books, because you could speculate just about anything.

Navigation: Harry does use a spell in "Goblet of Fire" which helps him to find his way through a maze by pointing his wand north. So basically you'd have a compass. Good start.

Warmth: Wands are used for starting fires throughout the books, so given some wood to burn warmth would not be a problem.

Rain Gear: At one point, Hermione puts a spell on Harry's glasses so that they'll repel water during a Quiddich match. If you put the same spell on your clothes, you could theoretically walk in the rain without getting wet.

Food: This is tougher. As far as the books suggest, you can't just conjure food out of thin air. I'd suggest finding a river with fish in it, and then stunning the fish so you can grab them. Or the "impedimentia" jinx would stop them from being able to swim away. Also, you can use an engorgement spell to make things bigger, so a few edible mushrooms or berries found by the trail could be increased in size to make a decent feed.

Water: There are moments when wizards have water spew forth from their wands in the books, so I guess as long as that water is clean there's no need to carry or filter any. Which is good, because I haven't heard of any anti-Giardia spell.

SOS: This one's easy. From their first year in school the young witches and wizards learn to send sparks into the air from their wands to call for help.

Of course, if an adult wizard were lost in the woods, he could simply disapparate and show up back at home. But then, that would be cheating!

Engaged at 1685 meters above sea level!!!

Dear beloved brother and sisters,

Thank for your prayers and encouragements over the past few months. I am excited to announce that Jenny and I got engaged on July 24th, 2007.

Due to construction of the highway near sea level, Jenny and I were forced to attempt a more difficult ascent up the mountain. Jenny and I spent seven hours hiking up Brunswick Mountain. The hike was grueling; we passed through the land of giant slugs, swamps of flying insects, and we spent the last 200m ascent on our hands and knees scrambling up a rock slide. At times it was discouraging due to the cloud covers on the majority of the climb and the difficulty of the ascent. I had thoughts of postponing the proposing due to the conditions but I knew you were all praying for me so I turned to God’s leading. And praise the Lord as we summit Brunswick Mountain we were greeted with clear blue sky. The sky cleared the moment we reached to top and I took the cue from the Lord. We were treated with the majestic view of the coastal mountains north of Vancouver.

I told Jenny that I want God's majestic creation to witness this occasion and at that I got down on my knees and proposed. Jenny managed to whisper a “yes” and the rest is history. :-)

Thank again for all your prayers and for allowing me to share this wonderful chapter of my life with you all. Feel free to bombard me with more questions when I am back in Toronto with Jenny in a few weeks.

Blessings,

Joel & Jenny

First-born child reaps IQ advantage

From the Toronto Star:

Study finds the eldest scores 2.3 points higher than next sibling in line

health reporter

If you've spent a lifetime losing arguments to your older brother or sister, there's likely a good reason for it.

Chances are they really are a little smarter than you.

A study of more than 240,000 Norwegian teenagers says that first-born children are, on average, 2.3 IQ points more intelligent than the next kid in line.

And study author Dr. Petter Kristensen said in an interview that each successive child is likely to be a little less smart than the one before.

The research, published today in the journal Science, drew its data from male Norwegian army conscripts aged 18 and 19. In Norway, almost all male teenagers are required to perform military service and IQ tests are mandatory. It showed the average IQ of the first-born men was 103.2 compared with 101.2 for second-borns and 100 for third-borns.

Kristensen says earlier research showed the same intelligence differences in female siblings.

The Norwegian study also showed second-born men who had an older sibling die in infancy had an average IQ of 102.9 while those that had two elder siblings die had an average IQ of 102.6, still higher than second and third-borns.

"The study provides evidence that the relation between birth order and IQ score is dependent on the social rank in the family and not birth order as such," the researchers write in Science.

The Norwegian data does not shed light on why social rank matters, although there are several theories.

First among them is that the sheer amount of attention parents can shower on first-borns is diluted as each new child arrives, says Kristensen, a professor at Norway's National Institute of Occupational Health.

"When number two (or three) comes, there will be sharing of resources and less for each."

Those parental "resources" are not likely related to the material goods or money allotted to the eldest child, but the amount of time parents can spend on such things as reading and playing.

But parental attention cannot be the sole explanation for the elder child phenomenon since the research showed only children are less intelligent on average than first-borns in larger families, he says.

"In fact ... it's quite clear that only children score lower than first children in two or three-child families," he says. "I'm not sure what the reasons for this are, but there have been (theories that) the older child gains from tutoring the younger children."

The only-child effect may be unique to Norway, where most affluent and socially stable families – those likely to raise more intelligent children – tend to have at least two or three offspring.

But even accounting for socio-economic differences, some of the IQ deficit still exists for only children, Kristensen says. Earlier research showed the same intelligence differences in female siblings, according to the Norwegian researcher.

Birth order expert Frank Sulloway, who wrote an analysis of the Norwegian work, says the 2.3-point IQ difference between first and second born children may appear modest, but could have significant consequences.

He said, for example, that such a point spread could easily make the difference between getting into a first-tier university or having to settle for second- best.

Sulloway, a visiting scholar with the Institute of Personality and Social Research at the University of California, Berkeley, believes the IQ advantage enjoyed by older siblings is rooted in their function within the family unit.

In particular, he says, their frequent role as babysitter and teacher to younger siblings builds a mindset that they are more responsible and intelligent than their brothers and sisters and translates into the elevated IQ score.

Sulloway called the Norwegian paper the "most important" done in the field in the past 70 years and estimated its sample size was at least 50 times bigger than the next largest sibling order study.

He also said it left the theory that the IQ advantage doesn't exist "dead as a doornail."

But Sulloway pointed out that the "elegantly designed" Norwegian research averages out IQ levels over an entire population and that younger siblings can and often do score higher than older ones in many families.

Te team arrived in Beijing on Friday and before boarding the train on Saturday they went to the temple of heaven.

According to Jenny, the train ride was fun. They got to meet some really cool people and did sing alongs! They sang English songs and then in return the locals sang their Tibetan or their ethnic songs. Lily and Phoebe, cute white girls attracting a lot of attention and everyone wants to take pictures with them. It is good to hear that they drove right into the cross-culture experience with the locals.

The Summer is shaping up

I love God's plans... everything is beginning to fit together nicely. My Summer is slowly shaping up, and like a puzzle, every piece is falling into place.

Apr 29 - June 7 (Jenny away on missions in China)
May 16 - June 27 (Mondays and Wednesday Night): Summer school - Gospel Church & Culture
May 19 - May 2: Spring Camp
July 15 - Aug 8: Vancouver visit
Aug 9 - Aug 11: Willow Leadership Summit
Aug 13 - Aug 17: Arts and Sports Camp

The nice thing about the Leadership Summit being held on Aug 9 - 11 is that I can fly straight from Vancouver to Chicago and attend the conference live. There are Air Canada flights from YVR to ORD departing at 11:00p and arriving at 5:00a. That gives me 4 hours to travel to Willowcreek to attend the 9:00a conference. Nice. Now I can see my canceled Harmony Flights to be a blessing in disguise.

The Leadership Summit will be so cool!

Lunch with the big guys

Another jam packed day, another productive day. This week has been crazy! I never knew there so much to do during the summer "break". Monday was a nice Sabbath. Tuesday, dim sum lunch with grandma. Wednesday, worked all day, meeting after dinner and tutor. Today, graduation rehearsal, work at church, and tutor.

The highlight of the day was surely lunch. Lunch with Kaarina, the dean of student life, Nelly, admin of Hudson Taylor Centre, Doreen, executive assistant to the provost, and provost Dr. Earl Davey. Lunch with the provost was intense. I had to be on my best behaviour. :P But from him, I learn so much about how upper levels of Tyndale runs.

Because of the parties present during lunch, at one point I felt that pulled in many directions. When they asked me what was my plans for the coming year, whether or not I'll be serving at the student council, I replied no and Kaarina gave me a frown. Then I suddenly felt the tension with when Nelly's eyes when with the prospect to recruit me to the Chinese student council. LOL. Oh, the fun of ministry. In the end I made my point clear that I wanted to focus on my congregation. But I'll still lend my helping hand to both council occasionally.

The most encouraging part of lunch was when Doreen asked about my trip to Vancouver in July, she asked me if I have family there. I said no but Kaarina jumped in and said "Not yet". Then Earl started sharing his experience when he was a missionary in Indonesia that the culture always uses the phrase "not yet". So much hope, I like it.

It turns out that Earl also have a passion for photography. Oh, we will have so much to talk about. :)

Leaving on a Jet Plane (Jenny's China edition)

Flight: CA 992 (Air China)
Depart: Vancouver International Apt 3 May 13:00
Arrive: Beijing Capital Apt 4 May 15:00
Aircraft: 767 Stops: Non-Stop

Travel Time: 11hrs

Jenny is on the plane on the way to China as we speak. In another 10 hours, her team will arrive in Beijing, China. To be honest, I do not know exactly how I feel right now. Don't get me wrong, I am SO proud of her and SO excited for what God has to teach her. But bottom line, I do miss her. I have sent her off last Sunday and she had a 4 days long orientation with her team, so we only had minimal email contact over the past few days.

I believe this time alone is very good. You may think I sound ridiculous because I only see her twice a year anyways, and more time "apart" is good? LOL. To be honest, yeah! This gives me the time to think, reflect and pray about our relationship. Meanwhile it gives me the time to focus on my task here at home.

It is funny that exactly 11 months ago, the roles were reversed. Jenny and I were in Hong Kong, and I left Hong Kong for Bangkok and not knowing when I'll see her again. Oh, and look at how our relationship grow during our time apart. I was able to do when God planned for my on my mission trip, and Jenny was able to witness to her family in Hong Kong and China. We kept in contact through letters and blogs.

I am so proud of her. I know God is shaping her into the beautiful, young lady He had in His mind. And I cannot wait to meet this masterpiece of God when she returns. And the best part is that I'll get to see her in July. What else can I ask for? I am so blessed. God has already spoken to me in volumes over the past days, I am waiting with high expectations on what God has in store.http://jenny-chinagp07.blogspot.com/
Pray for the safety of their flight, and for rest and jet lag recovery. Also pray for strength in the Lord, and for the spiritual attacks. Susie Colby (the wife of one of the staff leader) has already fallen ill and had to miss the 4 days orientation.

God speed, Jenny, and serve him well.

A dream came true...

Seriously, I have dream of this in my dreams when I was in university. I should have developed it but now someone beat me to it.

Camera in a bag to make it waterproof.

Men, Prepare for battle...

The weather is getting warmer, the snow is melting away. It is that time of the year I remind my boys again, to prepare for battle...

Driving to school this morning, before turning onto Garnier St. that leads to Tyndale, I had to drive by St. Joseph's. This is the time of the year when all the catholic school girls dig out their skirts. It is ridiculous how they hike up their skirts, it sickens me. I ask myself why do they bother to put one on if the skirt does not cover anything at all!?!

My heart aches for all men who wants to be righteous. This is the time of the year where it seems like the world is out to get them. Bounce your eyes, men!

Sunday, March 25

My Back...

My back gave in on me again last night... I woke up in the middle of the night and I could not fall back to sleep for two hour. The pain was excruciating. It was a pain I've never felt before, it is just above the lumber region.

Over the past month, I've been hindered by the back problems.
But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.
~2 Cor. 4:7-9 TNIV
But with the all-surpassing power from god, I can be struck down, but not destroyed.

Caffeine Intake

I usually avoid taking in a large amount of caffeine - just a medium double double here, a glass of coke there and the occasion vanilla bean latte . But as a students, during this time of the year, sometime it is necessary to get a boost from these black sludge. This website will have you calculate your daily caffeine intake. (This one is for you, Bernard.)

BTW, I just found out that if I drink 85.31 cups of Starbucks Grande Caffe Mocha, it will kill me... but then, that will also cost me $415.38 after taxes. So why would I do that? I could spend it on the 2,474.06 Reese's Peanut Butter Cups that will do the same thing.

Take care of your...

"The pulpit is a lonely place..."
~Dr. Victor Shepherd
These words of Dr. Shepherd regularly echoes through my mind to serve as a reminder to be on guard. As His servant we are called to fight by the side of our Lord Jesus Christ. But serving as one of His officers, you become a prime target of Satan's attacks.
Ho! Get your hands down. Do not salute me. There are goddamned snipers all around this area who would love to grease an officer. I'm Lieutenant Dan Taylor. Welcome to Fourth Platoon.
~Lt. Dan, Forrest Gump
The devil and his army would love to take aim and take down a church leader. They salivate at the opportunity to create such chaos in the Christian camp. Just look at what happened to Ted Haggard or Paul Melnichuk.

Learning from one of my favorite movie, "All Quiet on the Western Front (1930)", while at times is might seem quiet on the battle front, don't go around chasing butterflies for snipers are hiding in ambush and ready to take aim.

Be alert.

Take care of your eyes...
Take care of your thoughts...
Take care of your actions...

Lust. Greed. Pride. These feelings are normal for we are human, but sin creeps in on how we act on these feelings. Come to the alter and laid these thoughts and feelings at Jesus feet.

In ministry there is this moral code, and if you break it you are done.

The Storehouse of His Bounty

The LORD will open the heavens, the storehouse of his bounty, to send rain on your land in season and to bless all the work of your hands. You will lend to many nations but will borrow from none.
~Deut 28:12

http://www.thestar.com/News/article/187986

After reading this Toronto Star article, I was really upset. The story of Ananias and Sapphira from Acts 5:1-11 came into mind. No, I do not wish the individuals in the above article to drop dead for that judgment ultimately belongs to God. But in the mist of the followers sharing the things they have for body of Christ, how shall we handle the leaders who are misusing God's resources for their own benefits. Yes, in Deut. 28:12 it did say that The LORD will open the heavens to send rain on your land in season and to bless all the work of your hands. But I guess these leaders forgot the second part of this passage, that they will lend to many nations and advance God's mission.

But I'll first remove the plank from eye. Lord, let me be responsible for the resources you have graciously provided for my. My I be diligent in how I use these resources and be of good steward.

The Paradoxical Life

Let [the person] who cannot be alone beware of comminuty. Let [the person] who is not in community beware of alone.
~Dietrich Bonhoeffer
Of one of the many paradoxes in life, we need both community and solitude. "Human beings were made for relationships: without a rich and nourishing network of connections, we wither and die... At the same time, we were made for solitude. Our lives may be rich in relationships, but the human self remains a mystery of enfolded inwardness that no other person can possibly enter or know. If we fail to embrace our ultimate aloneness and seek meaning only in communion with others, we wither and die." ~Parker J. Palmer

In light of what I've been experiencing recently, I have realized that is the essence of "connecting". With my headache and bad back, I have withdrew into solitude. When Rev. Lau challenged me today why I did not seek support from the church and community, I realized one of my weakness have surface. The temptation to solve problems on my own. But the idea of sharing each other's burdens and pains in the process of connecting with others and with ourselves.

Lord, thank you for helping me see my weaknesses.

Vancouver Visit

I cannot contain my excitement. My flight to Vancouver is booked for this summer. I get to see Jenny in:

Wednesday, February 28

Will the good guys always win?

From Genesis 39:
The LORD was with Joseph and he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master. When his master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD gave him success in everything he did, Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned.
(v 2-4)
The Lord was with Joseph and He blessed Joseph even though Joseph was sold as a slave...
How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?" And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even be with her.
(v 9b, 10)
And Joseph loved the Lord and refuse to sin against God.
Joseph's master took him and put him in prison, the place where the king's prisoners were confined.
(v 20a)
The reward for Joseph's love for the Lord? He was thrown into prison.

We cannot help but ask, how come these things happens to those who love the Lord? This is one of the biggest misconception of being a Christian. We grew up reading fairy tales and stories with plots telling us that in the end good things will fall upon the good guys? That's only "fair". But no, Joel, that what it said in the Bible too...
However, there should be no poor among you, for in the land the LORD your God is giving you to possess as your inheritance, he will richly bless you, if only you fully obey the LORD your God and are careful to follow all these commands I am giving you today.
~Deut. 15:4, 5
So didn't the Bible teach us that if we obey, we will be blessed? Yes. But are these blessings found in the world? Or is it in the kingdom to come?
Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. "
~Mark 8:34
Jesus said if we are to follow him, we must take up our cross... By taking up our cross, we will suffer pain and die. Where's the "blessings" in that? When we love the Lord, the devil hates it, and therefore the world hates it. Therefore the world will try to nail us to the cross, and many time the world will succeed in doing so. But by following the Lord, we are not part of this world, and thus our blessings and rewards in not found here.

Christians, when you follow Christ, don't not expect it will be smooth sailing. I can guarantee you that it won't be. Instead, expect suffering, and rest your hopes in the kingdom to come.

The Black Mush

Every kid had witnessed this horrid experience. This is my version:

I was in Grade 3, for science class we were learning about fruits and we were to told to bring a fruit to class one day. I do not remember what I brought, but I did remember what my neighbour brought to school. When we were told to take out our fruit, by neighbour produced this black shapeless mass. The class responded in a unison "eeeeekkkkkk".

That was the day I learn bananas turns black.

Which is too bad, for now I also know that bananas is such a nutritious fruit. I usually bring 3 with me to volleyball tourneys or have one after a jog. But they get squished so easily.

But fear no more, thanks to www.bananabunker.com, you can now own your very own bombproof case for your banana!

A $5US case to protect your 20 cents banana!?!

Oh boy, what will people think of next?

The Dare

Dare To Move
by Switchfoot

Welcome to the planet
Welcome to existence
Everyone's here
Everyone's here
Everybody's watching you now
Everybody waits for you now
What happens next?
What happens next?

I dare you to move
I dare you to move
I dare you to lift yourself up off the floor
I dare you to move
I dare you to move
Like today never happened
Today never happened before

Welcome to the fallout
Welcome to resistance
The tension is here
The tension is here
Between who you are and who you could be
Between how it is and how it should be

I dare you to move
I dare you to move
I dare you to lift yourself up off the floor
I dare you to move
I dare you to move
Like today never happened
Today never happened

Maybe redemption has stories to tell
Maybe forgiveness is right where you fell
Where can you run to escape from yourself?
Where you gonna go?
Where you gonna go?
Salvation is here

I dare you to move
I dare you to move
I dare you to lift yourself
Lift yourself up off the floor
I dare you to move
I dare you to move
Like today never happened
Today never happened
Today never happened
Today never happened before
At times, life seems like a dare. We can refuse to accept the dare and let life passes us by, or we can take the leap of faith the accept the dare as a challenge. What is the consequences of the dare? If you fail at the dare: Humiliation. Embarrassment. Defeat. Rejection. If you succeed: Triumph. Achievement. Liberating. Growth.

Humiliation. Embarrassment. Defeat. Rejection. These are all extremely traumatic experiences. There is an inert fear in everyone of us to avoid these experiences if possible. Does the exultation of succeeding at a dare out-weights the possibility of these traumatic experience.

Two biblical characters came in mind. Jonah (because we are currently studying the book of Jonah) and Jacob.

Jonah. At the call to witness to the people in Nineveh (Assyrians), the brutally violent most hated enemies of Israel, Jonah refuse to accept the dare and fled. He did not want to face the ridicule of the people of Nineveh, or worst, face to crudity at the hands of these people. Also he did not think these people deserves the mercy of God. What happened to Jonah? In the belly of a fish... good as dead...

Jacob. When given the opportunity of meet face to face with God, what did he do? He took the dare and wrestled God. Is he out of his mind? The consequences of wrestling with God is far more serious than humiliation, embarrassment, defeat or rejection. It could cause him his life. Yet in the end, God blessed him

Jonah seek to save his life, but 'lost' it. Jacob took the dare that could of caused him his life, find life.
Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
~Matt 10:39
Do you dare?

Silver medals, but hearts of Gold

Facing the adversity of bad refereeing, the girls took home the silver metal over the weekend, wrapping up their very successful season and concludes the OCCAA league. The match was very excited, the games were neck-to-neck, back-and-forth. Losing 21-25, 25-27, 21-25. I am so proud of everyone of them, they worked hard all season to get to this point and they all have hearts of gold.

A special congratulations to League All-Stars: Natalie Lam and Alica Wilson, and team MVP Jenn Crabe.

In the presence in God's miracles

This term, I have designated Thursday as my Sabbath. A day for rest. A day to build connections. A day to connect with God, with myself, and with others brothers and sisters.

Yesterday, I had the joy of having lunch with Patrick and John Baik at Duff wings. Mmmm... After lunch, Baik and I headed downtown to pick up a photocopier.

A photocopier?

On Wednesday, I saw on Craig's List that a law firm is giving away a 5 years old Xerox 5855C copier. So immediately I jumped on the opportunity and arranged for the pickup today. During dinner on Wednesday night, I asked mom if any church organization needs a photocopier? She said perfect, 多倫多短宣中心 Toronto Chinese Christian Short Term Mission Training Centre needs a photocopier. Apparently I found out yesterday that the copier they have right now only makes about 10 copiers per day before overheating.

So Baik and I arrived at the law firm... only to find out that copier was larger than I though because of the additional modules. I made quick work and removed the paper sorter, but the paper loader was more of and hassle. It was on rails attached to the body of the copier by 4 screws. I had my trusty Swiss Army key chain knife was able remove 2 of the 4 screws. I needed longer screwdriver to remove the rest. Baik and I thought, let's wheel the unit down to the car and we'll see what we can do.

At the car, I soon realized I have to remover the paper loader. So out of options, I looked in to the spare tire wheel well of my car. I opened the bag containing the tire iron and to my surprised, there was a screw driver! I shouted "Praise God" and Baik and I cheered in the middle of the busy street in downtown tomorrow.

We loaded the copier into my car, thank God for the hatchback. I had to remove the front cover of the copier but the copier JUST fits through the hatch... seriously, no more than 5 cm leeway on each side and the top. Praise God.

I paper sorter fit perfectly in front of the copier and the paper loader sit snuggly on Baik's lap. I could not see out the back of my car, and I had to lean forward to see out of the right side of my car. So I kept the blinkers on and drove on the right lane all the way back uptown.

All in all, the was filled with joy as I delivered the copier to TCSTMTC. I know I could have sold the copier and toner and made a good sum of money, but giving to God's ministry in need was so much more rewarding. $8 downtown parking, several scratches on my car and 2 1/2 hours of labour later, I arrived at TCSTMTC. Dad arrived shortly after work to help. However, we could not get the main unit up the stairs to the Training Centre so a piano mover will arrive today to take the copier upstairs.

Director Yu of TCSTMTC commented how much faith I had to go and get the copier, and we are all excited how God provided.

Thank you, Lord, for gracing us with your presence.
